The Curtin/Curtain family history
The beginnings of our Curtin family story - at least as far as we can trace back - can be found on a small country farm at Tullygarvan, near Lahinch in Ireland.
The first of our ancestors that appear in any records are Austin Curtin and his wife Ellen (nee Howard).
As found on the County Clare Library site:
Griffith's Primary Valuation took place throughout Ireland during the middle of the 19th Century and the valuation of Clare was published in 1855. It was a survey of land occupation to determine the amount of tax a landowner or occupier should pay towards the support of the Poor Law System.

Griffiths Valuation site lists both Austin and Christopher Curtin as tenants on the land held by Sir Edward Fizgerald. Can we presume they were brothers (or at a minimum related) as they both were listed as being part of Tullygarvan West??
In vact there are two Austin Curtins listed ... perhaps his father was also called Austin.. or maybe another close relative. Austin was a very popular Curtin name!
The map of their land is seen below
